BEACHES
Balos Lagoon
The famous Balos Lagoon is located 56 km northwest of Chania. Its white-pink sand and shallow turquoise waters create an exotic scenery. As part of the Natura 2000 program, it hosts rare species such as Caretta-Caretta sea turtles, cormorants, and Eleonora’s falcons. It is one of the most iconic destinations in Crete.
How to Access:
- By Boat (The Relaxing Way): Enjoy a full-day cruise departing from the Port of Kissamos. This is the most popular option as it usually includes a stop at the historic island of Gramvousa, where you can hike up to the Venetian fortress for a stunning view.
- By Car (The Adventurous Way): For those who prefer a more flexible schedule, you can drive to Balos. Be prepared for a 10 km dirt road at the end of the route, leading to a large parking area. From there, a 20-minute hike (1 km downhill) awaits you. The reward? The most iconic panoramic view of the lagoon—the perfect spot for photos!
Elafonisi Beach
Located at the southwestern edge of Chania (76 km away), Elafonisi is world-famous for its white-pink sand and crystal-clear shallow waters. The peninsula “breaks” from the mainland, creating a separate island feel. A Natura Protected Area and refuge for Caretta-Caretta turtles, it is strictly forbidden to remove plants or sand from the shore.
How to Access:
- By Bus: Easily accessible via the West Crete Bus Service (KTEL) with regular routes from Chania.
- By Car: A scenic 90-minute route, located 5 km south of the historic Chrysoskalitissa Monastery.
Falassarna Beach
Located 59 km west of Chania, the fantastic Falassarna is consistently awarded as one of Europe’s finest beaches. Famous for its turquoise, refreshing waters and its vast sandy shore, it offers a sense of absolute freedom. The main beach, Pahia Ammos, is so wide that it never feels crowded, even in the heart of summer.
As you descend the hill from the village of Platanos, you will notice many greenhouses, as the area is famous for growing high-quality fruits and vegetables. The beach is well-organized with taverns and local accommodation for those wishing to stay longer and enjoy the famous sunset.
How to Access:
- By Bus: Regular daily routes are available from the Chania Intercity Bus Station (KTEL).
- By Car: A comfortable drive of about 1 hour from Chania. The view from the top of the hill before reaching the coast is breathtaking.
Seitan Limani (Stefanou Beach)
Stefanou Beach is situated next to the famous Seitan Limani, located 22 km northeast of Chania on the Akrotiri peninsula. This hidden gem is known for its unique, narrow rock formations that cut through the sea, creating a stunning zig-zag inlet with turquoise, crystal-clear waters. Its wild, rugged beauty makes it one of the most photographed spots in Crete.
How to Access:
- By Car: A 30-minute drive from Chania.
The Path: To reach the shore, you must follow a steep, rocky downhill path for about 5-10 minutes.
Caution: The descent is challenging; do not forget to wear athletic shoes or sneakers. Avoid flip-flops for your safety.
