The Venetian Harbor & Old Town
The heart of Chania beats in its 14th-century harbor. Dominated by the famous Venetian Lighthouse, renovated during the Egyptian period, this is one of the most photographed spots in Greece. Walking through the narrow, cobblestone alleys of the Old Town feels like traveling back in time. Tall Venetian mansions, vibrant colors, and hidden arches create a romantic atmosphere that disconnects you from modern reality and invites you to discover its 5,000-year-old history.
The Catholic Church of Chania
Founded by the Order of Capuchin Franciscan monks in 1566, this church is a symbol of Chania’s multicultural identity. The current temple, rebuilt in 1879 by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli, features beautiful neoclassical elements. It remains an active and vital part of the city’s life, hosting masses in multiple languages for visitors from around the world.
The New Archaeological Museum of Chania (Halepa)
A must-visit for every traveler, the new Archaeological Museum is housed in a state-of-the-art, bioclimatic building in the historic district of Halepa. Its impressive collection guides you through the rich history of the Chania region, from the prehistoric and Minoan eras to the Roman period. Through unique artifacts, linear B tablets, and magnificent sculptures, the museum offers a modern and captivating narrative of Crete’s cultural heritage.
The Municipal Market (Agora)
An architectural landmark since 1913, the Municipal Market was modeled after the covered market of Marseille and officially inaugurated by Eleftherios Venizelos. This iconic “cross-shaped” monument stands as the beating heart of the city center, embodying the bustling energy of Chania’s traditional commerce and vibrant local life. It remains a timeless symbol of the city’s heritage and a focal point for every visitor.
