Theriso Gorge & Village

Located just south of Chania, the Theriso Gorge offers a spectacular 14 km drive leading to the historic village of Theriso. It is a favorite getaway for locals, known for its significantly cooler temperatures and excellent traditional tavernas serving authentic Cretan cuisine.

Theriso holds a significant place in Greek history as the birthplace of Eleftherios Venizelos’ mother. It was here, in 1905, that Venizelos organized the Revolutionary Assembly that led to the independence of Crete and its eventual union with Greece. A visit to Theriso combines a scenic natural route with a deep dive into the island’s heroic past.

How to Access:

  1. By Car: A short and beautiful 20-minute drive from Chania. The road runs through the bottom of the gorge, surrounded by lush greenery and towering cliffs.

    Tip: Visit during the afternoon to enjoy a traditional meal in the village square after your scenic drive.
